A new study in the March 7
issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association reports that
Internet diet sites that adopt a "hands-on" approach to weight loss
can help people meet and maintain their weight-loss goals. People in a plan with
weekly contact and feedback were twice as likely to achieve their weight-loss
goal as participants placed in a less structured Internet plan.
With more than two million
web sites promoting diet and weight loss available by doing a simple search, how
do you know if the web site you choose is providing sound advice?
Don't rely on just one site; look at a variety of sites -- because no
matter how objective a site is or seems to be, there are still biases.
For example, a lot of web sites are sponsored by companies that have
particular products to sell, including supplements and prepackaged foods. Sites that sell stuff are suspect because there is no magic
bullet cure for obesity. Fat-burners
don't work, and the only way to lose weight is to eat less and exercise more.
For solid mainstream diet and fitness advice, "look to web sites
that offer safe and healthy meal plans and exercise advice without pills and fad
foods.

The National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity (NANA) this
week testified
to a House Appropriations Subcommittee on the rising incidence of overweight
and obesity
Annually, between 310,000 and 580,000 deaths can be related to these

Poor eating habits and physical inactivity cause five times more deaths than
HIV, guns, and illicit drug use combined. They contribute to the incidence
of heart disease, stroke, cancer, high blood pressure and diabetes, which
together form four of the seven leading causes of death in the United
States
